What is Emotional Health and Why is it Important?

Most people know that it’s important to take care of their physical health, but what about the benefits of emotional health? It turns out that our emotions are just as important as our physical health, and we need to find ways to take care of them if we want to be healthy and happy.

A recent study by the CDC shows that people who suffer from anxiety and depression have an increased chance of developing heart-related problems such as stroke or heart failure. (1)

You can do everything right on the surface: eat right and exercise but if you don’t take some time to evaluate your emotions and how they are affecting you then you will start to feel the effects physically. and this can begin to disrupt your day-to-day life

So what does it mean to be in an emotionally healthy state?

Being emotionally healthy is not just about feeling happy all the time. A person who is emotionally healthy or emotionally fit can better handle all of life’s blessings and challenges with amazing equanimity.

Someone who has their emotions in check can better evaluate their mental health and recognize their emotional triggers. When your emotional health is thriving you will begin to notice how the people in your life treat you and will be more conscious of the opportunities around you.

The Benefits of Improving Your Emotional Health

When it comes to our emotional well-being, there are many benefits to be gained from improving it besides just feeling happier. ( though that is very important )

So what are some of these benefits?

  • Physical Health. Studies have shown that people who are happier and more emotionally fulfilled tend to be healthier overall. They have lower rates of heart disease, arthritis, and other chronic conditions.
  • Reduce stress levels. When we are stressed, our bodies release hormones that can be damaging to our health. by managing our emotions better, we can help keep our stress levels under control and reduce the risk of developing health problems.
  • Higher Self-Esteem. When we feel good about ourselves and our lives, we have more confidence in our skills and abilities and being to know our worth.
  • Healthy Relationships When you are better able to recognize your emotional triggers you can better communicate with the people in your life. This will lead to a deeper and more positive relationship with your friends, family, and partner.

Find Out What Makes You Happy

There are many ways that you can improve your emotional health. But before you come up with a game plan you need to dig deep and figure out what brings your joy and happiness.

A flower blossoms for its own joy. – Oscar Wilde

What makes you happy? It’s a question we all ask ourselves at some point in our lives. And it’s not always an easy question to answer. Sometimes, it takes a little trial and error to figure out what brings us joy. But it’s worth the effort! When we find things that make us happy, we can improve our emotional health.

Finding out what makes you happy:

Pay Attention to Your Emotions. When you’re doing something, take note of how you feel. Are you feeling stressed or anxious? Or are you feeling happy and relaxed? If you’re feeling positive emotions, then chances are you’re doing something that makes you happy.

Talk to Your Friends and Family. They can be a great source of information about what makes you happy. Ask them what they enjoy doing and why.

Experiment with Different Activities. Trying new things is a great way to find out what you like and don’t like. So go ahead and try that new hobby or activity you’ve been wanting to try. You never know, you might just find something you love!

Keep a Journal. This can be a helpful way to track your emotions and thoughts over time. After a while, you may start to see patterns emerge about what makes you happy (or not so happy).

Seek Professional Help. If you’re struggling to identify what makes you happy, or if you’re feeling unhappy and don’t know why to consider seeking professional help. A therapist can help you explore your emotions and find ways to improve your emotional well-being.

Create a Plan to Improve Your Emotional Health

Creating a plan to improve your emotional wellbeing and improve your happiness can seem like a daunting task. However, it doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Here are a few simple tips to get you started:

Identify your emotions. The first step is to become aware of your emotions. Start by taking some time each day to check in with yourself and notice how you’re feeling. Are you happy, sad, anxious, angry, or something else?

Identify your triggers. Once you know how you’re feeling, try to identify what has triggered those emotions. Is there something specific that seems to make you feel better or worse?

Find healthy coping mechanisms. It’s important to find healthy ways to cope with your emotions. This might include exercise, journaling, spending time with friends or family, or anything else that makes you feel good.

Seek professional help if needed. If you’re struggling to cope with your emotions, don’t be afraid to seek professional help. A therapist can help you understand and manage your emotions in a healthy way.
